HP Dubai Business Laptops: EliteBook, ProBook, ZBook and the New Names Explained

Buying HP in Dubai for a business means choosing between three laptop families: ProBook for everyday office work, EliteBook for managers and people who travel, and ZBook for engineering, design and data work that needs workstation graphics. Since 2024 HP has been moving all of them to a new naming scheme, so a current quote might say "EliteBook 8 G1i 14" where an older one said "EliteBook 840 G11". This guide decodes the new names, maps each family to the jobs it suits, and covers the desktop and all in one names that changed at the same time.

The rename in one paragraph

HP announced the change in a newsroom post on 20 May 2024. The post, by Stacy Wolff, HP's senior vice president of design and sustainability, set out two prefixes: Omni for consumer PCs and Elite for commercial PCs, with Pro also used for commercial lines. Each name carries a number from 2 to 10, with 10 written as X, and HP said commercial PCs would use even numbers that map closely to the system already in place. Gaming PCs stay under OMEN. The first devices under the new scheme were the OmniBook X and the EliteBook Ultra G1q. In March 2025 the change reached the bulk of the commercial range, and HP's own store now lists business laptops such as the EliteBook 8 G1i, the ProBook 4 G1i and G2i, and the ZBook 8, ZBook X, ZBook Fury and ZBook Ultra.

OmniBook is the consumer laptop line. It is not a business family, and for most companies in Dubai it is not the right buy: commercial lines carry the business warranty options and management features that a fleet needs. For HP Dubai buyers equipping a team, that difference outweighs any saving on the sticker.

How to read a current HP business name

Take "HP EliteBook 8 G1i 14 inch" as an example. Each part means something.

PartExampleWhat it tells you
Prefix and formEliteBook, ProBook, ZBook, EliteDesk, ProStudioBusiness family and type: Book is a laptop, Desk a desktop, Studio an all in one
Tier number2, 4, 6, 8, X, UltraPosition in the range; higher means more features and materials
GenerationG1, G2Generation under the new scheme, restarting at G1
Platform letteri, a, qProcessor maker: Intel, AMD or Qualcomm
Screen size14 inch, 16 inchThe same model is often sold in two sizes

The platform letter is the part people miss. HP's own store shows "ZBook Ultra 14 inch G1a" with AMD graphics and "ZBook Fury G1i" with Intel, and trade coverage of HP's 2025 launches describes the EliteBook 6 G1q as a Snapdragon X Series machine. Two laptops with the same family and tier can therefore have quite different processors, battery behaviour and driver sets.

Trade press mapping of the March 2025 change put the old 800 series under EliteBook 8, the 600 series under EliteBook 6 and the 400 series under ProBook 4. So the successor to an EliteBook 840 G11 is an EliteBook 8 G1i 14 inch, and the 16 inch version replaces the old 860.

ProBook: the everyday office laptop

ProBook is HP's mainstream business line. HP's store currently lists the ProBook 4 G1i and newer ProBook 4 G2i in 14 inch form, with Intel Core Ultra 5 and Core Ultra 7 options. Below it sits the HP 200 series, listed with Intel Core 3, Core 5 and AMD Ryzen 5 options, which is the entry business tier rather than a consumer machine.

ProBook suits staff whose work is email, documents, spreadsheets, a browser and video calls. In a Dubai office that is usually admin, sales support, operations and most of finance. It is the line to standardise on when you are buying in quantity and want a manageable cost per seat.

EliteBook: for managers, travel and security

EliteBook is the premium commercial line. The 6 and 8 tiers are the core of it, with X and Ultra above them for thinner and lighter designs. HP's business laptop store lists the EliteBook 8 G1i 14 inch with Intel Core Ultra 5 225H and Core Ultra 7 255H options, and an EliteBook X G2 collection above it.

The case for EliteBook over ProBook is usually build quality, weight, screen and battery, plus the security and management features IT teams care about. For a manager who spends half the week between Dubai, Abu Dhabi and client sites, or who flies regularly, the difference is felt every day. For a desk user who never unplugs, it often is not.

ZBook: when the job needs a workstation

ZBook is HP's mobile workstation family, and it is the line that changed most in 2025. The Wikipedia history of the range lists the ZBook Fury 18 G1i and ZBook Ultra 14 G1a as announced on 10 January 2025, and the ZBook 8 G1i and G1a and the ZBook X G1i on 18 March 2025. Before that, the range used Firefly, Power and Studio names with G10 and G11 generations.

HP's store shows how the new tiers differ:

  • ZBook 8. 14 and 16 inch, with integrated graphics or an entry NVIDIA RTX 500 Ada. The light workstation, for users who need certified drivers and a bit more than a business laptop.
  • ZBook X. 16 inch, listed with NVIDIA RTX PRO 1000 and RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell graphics with 8 GB. A step up for CAD, BIM and rendering.
  • ZBook Fury. 16 inch on HP's store and 18 inch announced, listed with RTX PRO 3000, 4000 and 5000 Blackwell options up to 24 GB. The heavy end: large assemblies, simulation and model work.
  • ZBook Ultra. 14 inch listed with AMD processors and integrated Radeon graphics, for users who want a ZBook in a 14 inch chassis without a separate graphics card.

If your team runs Revit, SolidWorks, Civil 3D or similar, check the software vendor's certified hardware list before choosing a tier, and size graphics memory to the largest model you open. Our guide to mobile workstations for engineering and design teams in Dubai goes into that sizing.

One practical rule for HP Dubai buyers choosing between the top EliteBook and the lower ZBook tiers: if the software your team uses publishes a certified hardware list, buy from it. If it does not, and the heaviest task is a video call or a large spreadsheet, an EliteBook will serve better for the weight and battery life.

Desktops and all in ones under the new names

The same logic applies to desktops. HP's store lists the ProDesk 4 Tower G1i, ProDesk 4 SFF G1i and ProDesk 2 Tower G1a; the ProStudio 4 and ProStudio 2 all in ones; the EliteStudio 8 all in one at 27 inch; and the Z2 Tower G1i workstation. The form factor is now part of the name: Tower, SFF for small form factor, and Mini for the one litre machines.

That last group is where the older names are most confusing. HP's earlier one litre business desktops were sold under names such as the Elite Mini 800 G9, and their successors carry names like EliteDesk 8 Mini G1i. If a quote mixes the two styles, you are looking at two different generations, not two names for one machine.

Settle these before choosing a tier

The family and tier narrow the choice. These questions finish it, and most of them matter more than the badge.

  • Memory. Sixteen gigabytes is a sensible floor for office users who keep many browser tabs, Teams and large spreadsheets open together. Ask whether memory is soldered or in slots, because that decides whether it can be raised later.
  • Storage. Size it to local files plus the offline cache of whatever cloud storage you use, then add headroom for updates.
  • Ports and docks. Count the monitors and peripherals each desk uses, and pick a dock that suits the laptop's ports. Our guide to docking stations and monitors covers the mistakes.
  • Keyboard layout. Decide whether users need an Arabic and English layout or English only, and make sure the product number you order matches.
  • Warranty. HP's Care Pack FAQ says commercial PCs come with either a one year or three year base warranty, and that Care Packs for business devices can be added at the time of sale or within 90 days. Choose the cover with the laptop, not after the first fault.
  • One model per role. Whatever you pick, buy the same product number for everyone in that role. It keeps drivers, spares and chargers simple.

Which HP fits which job

RoleSensible starting pointWhy
Admin, reception, operationsProBook 4 or HP 200 seriesOffice apps and calls; standardise and buy in quantity
Finance with large spreadsheetsProBook 4 with more memory, or EliteBook 6Memory matters more than processor tier
Managers and frequent travellersEliteBook 8 or XWeight, battery, screen and security features
Engineers and architects on CADZBook X or ZBook FuryDedicated professional graphics and certified drivers
Data and AI usersZBook Fury or ZBook UltraGraphics memory or large shared memory pool
Fixed desks, shared stationsProDesk or EliteDesk Mini with a monitorCompact, easy to replace, no battery to wear out

Treat the table as a starting point. The jobs your staff actually do, and how long you plan to keep the machines, should decide it. On the second point, HP Dubai fleets kept for four or five years justify a higher tier more easily than machines replaced after two.

Older HP names you will still see in Dubai

Used and refurbished HP laptops in Dubai almost all carry the older three digit names, and those names are still useful. In the old scheme the first digit marked the series and the G number marked the generation, so an EliteBook 840 G5 belongs to the EliteBook 800 series, fifth generation, and a ProBook 640 G5 to the 600 tier of the same generation.

The HP laptops currently listed in the Codeeo Tech store are used units of this older generation, labelled as used, for example the EliteBook 840 G5 and the ProBook 640 G5 with 16 GB. They suit budget conscious seats where a current generation machine is not needed. The full range is in the HP section of the store, priced through Add to Quote.

FAQ

Did HP rename its laptops in 2025?

HP announced the new Omni, Elite and Pro naming in May 2024, starting with the OmniBook X and EliteBook Ultra G1q. Most of the commercial range, including EliteBook 6 and 8, ProBook 4 and the ZBook tiers, moved to it during 2025.

What does G1i mean on an HP laptop?

G1 is the first generation under the new naming, and the letter is the processor platform: i for Intel, a for AMD and q for Qualcomm Snapdragon.

Is OmniBook a business laptop?

No. Omni is HP's consumer prefix. For company fleets in Dubai, the commercial lines (ProBook, EliteBook and ZBook) are the usual choice.

Do I need a ZBook for AutoCAD or Revit?

For light 2D work, a well specified EliteBook can cope. For 3D models, BIM and rendering, a ZBook with professional graphics and certified drivers is the safer choice. Check the software vendor's certified hardware list.

What replaced the EliteBook 840?

Under the new naming, the 14 inch EliteBook 8 G1i follows the EliteBook 840 G11, and the 16 inch EliteBook 8 G1i follows the 860.

Is the HP 200 series a consumer laptop?

No. HP's store lists the HP 200 G2i and G2a among its business laptops. It is the entry business tier, below ProBook, and suits simple office roles where cost per seat matters most.

What to send with an HP Dubai enquiry

  1. The roles you are buying for and the main software each one runs.
  2. Quantity per role, and whether one standard model is the aim.
  3. Screen size, weight or battery needs for anyone who travels.
  4. Whether used units of an older generation are acceptable for some seats.
  5. Warranty or Care Pack level and the company name that should own it.

Codeeo Tech is a reseller at Building A1, IFZA Business Park, Dubai Silicon Oasis, not an authorised HP partner. Send those answers through the contact form and the reply will match each role to an HP family and tier, state whether each unit offered is new or used, and say who holds the warranty.
