MacBook 13 Inch in Dubai: Which Model Is Which, and How to Identify a Used One

"MacBook 13 inch" covers more than a dozen different laptops. Since 2020 it has meant either a 13 inch MacBook Air, from the M1 to today's M5, or a 13 inch MacBook Pro, which Apple's own model list shows ending with the M2 version of 2022. Before that came several generations of Intel models that no longer receive the latest macOS. To know exactly which one you are looking at, read the model identifier or part number from System Information and match it on Apple's "Identify your MacBook Air" or "Identify your MacBook Pro" page. This guide sets out the generations and shows how to check a used unit in Dubai before money changes hands.

Codeeo Tech does not sell Apple products. We wrote this because buyers in the UAE ask us how to compare a used MacBook against the Windows business laptops we do supply, and the first step is always knowing what the Mac actually is.

Every 13 inch MacBook Air with Apple silicon

Apple's "Identify your MacBook Air" page lists each model with its model identifier and the newest macOS it supports. These are the Apple silicon generations.

Apple's model nameModel identifierExample part numbersNewest macOS listed
MacBook Air (13 inch, M5), 2026Mac17,3MDH74xx/A, MDHA4xx/AmacOS 27
MacBook Air (13 inch, M4, 2025)Mac16,12MC654xx/A, MW0W3xx/AmacOS 27
MacBook Air (13 inch, M3, 2024)Mac15,12MRXN3xx/A, MXCR3xx/AmacOS 27
MacBook Air (M2, 2022)Mac14,2MLXW3xx/A, MLY33xx/AmacOS 27
MacBook Air (M1, 2020)MacBookAir10,1MGN63xx/A, MGN93xx/AmacOS 27

Apple notes that the "xx" in a part number is a variable that differs by country or region. Colours help too: among these models Apple lists Sky Blue only for the M4 and M5, Gold only for the M1, and Midnight and Starlight from the M2 onwards.

The M2 Air is the one that trips people up. Apple names it "MacBook Air (M2, 2022)" with no screen size, because at the time there was only one size. The 15 inch Air arrived later with its own identifier, Mac14,15. If a seller calls a unit a "13 inch M2", the identifier Mac14,2 is what confirms it.

The 13 inch MacBook Pro and where it ended

Apple's "Identify your MacBook Pro" page shows the 13 inch Pro running through several Intel generations to two Apple silicon versions, after which the Pro line continues only in 14 inch and 16 inch sizes. The newest entry on that page is a 14 inch M5 model.

Apple's model nameModel identifierNewest macOS listed
MacBook Pro (13 inch, M2, 2022)Mac14,7macOS 27
MacBook Pro (13 inch, M1, 2020)MacBookPro17,1macOS 27
MacBook Pro (13 inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)MacBookPro16,2macOS Tahoe 26

MacBook Pro (13 inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)MacBookPro15,4macOS Sequoia
MacBook Pro (13 inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)MacBookPro14,2macOS Ventura

The 2020 models show why the full name matters. Apple sold an Intel 13 inch Pro with two Thunderbolt ports, another with four, and the M1 version, all in the same year and the same shape. The M1 runs the current macOS; the two port Intel model stops at Sequoia. A listing that says only "MacBook Pro 13 inch 2020" could be any of the three.

Intel 13 inch models that still circulate

Dubai's second hand market still carries Intel MacBooks. Apple's pages show how far each one's software support goes:

  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13 inch, 2020), MacBookAir9,1: newest macOS listed is Sequoia.
  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13 inch, 2019), MacBookAir8,2, and the 2018 model, MacBookAir8,1: Sonoma.
  • MacBook Air (13 inch, 2017), MacBookAir7,2: Monterey.

For business use, the newest compatible macOS is the line that matters. A laptop that cannot take current macOS will eventually stop receiving security updates and may fail the compliance checks in your device management tool. For most companies, that rules out the Intel models for anything beyond a spare or a kiosk. A sibling article on the 2019 MacBook Air in Dubai's used market looks at that model in depth.

How to read a MacBook's identity in two minutes

Apple's support article "Find your Mac model name and serial number" lists several ways in. In order of usefulness for a buyer:

  1. System Information. Hold the Option key, open the Apple menu and choose System Information, then select Hardware. Apple says this shows the serial number, the model identifier and the model number, which is the part number. Search either of the last two on the identify pages above.
  2. About This Mac. From the Apple menu, this shows the model name and serial number.
  3. checkcoverage.apple.com. Enter the serial number to see the specific model name and its coverage status.
  4. The underside and the box. Apple says a serial number is usually printed on the underside near the regulatory markings, and may appear on the original packaging next to a barcode.

Two cautions. First, Apple warns that if the logic board was replaced during a repair, the serial printed on the case or box may no longer be active, so trust the serial shown in software. Second, the "A" number printed on the underside is not what Apple's identification pages use. They work from the model identifier and the part number, so do not rely on the A number alone to decide what you are buying.

Checking a used MacBook 13 inch in Dubai before you pay

Model identity is step one. A used MacBook 13 inch also needs to be free of the previous owner's account, and the person selling it should be able to prove it was theirs to sell.

Activation Lock

Apple's Activation Lock page explains that on a Mac with Apple silicon, or an Intel Mac with the T2 Security Chip, running macOS Catalina or later, Activation Lock is on whenever Find My is turned on. With it enabled, the owner's Apple Account password or device passcode is needed to erase or reactivate the Mac. That covers every Apple silicon MacBook in the tables above.

Ask the seller to turn off Find My Mac in front of you, sign out of their Apple Account and erase the Mac. If the Mac is not with them, Apple says the owner can remove it at iCloud.com/find by signing in and choosing Remove. A seller who cannot do either cannot give you a usable laptop.

Parts from another Mac

Apple's same page adds a newer warning: when a part from one product is used to repair another, that part could be locked to someone else's Apple Account. On a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple points to Repair Assistant to check for an unfinished repair. If a used MacBook has had a screen or board replaced outside Apple's network, run that check before buying.

Paperwork and condition

  • Ask for the original invoice and check that its serial matches System Information.
  • Run checkcoverage.apple.com on the serial; any remaining warranty is a bonus, and the model it returns should match the listing.
  • Check the battery condition, and test the keyboard, trackpad, ports, camera and speakers.
  • Note the keyboard layout. Arabic and English units are common in the UAE; make sure it is the one you want.

Our general advice on what drives a second hand laptop's value in Dubai applies to Macs as much as to Windows machines: battery, remaining warranty and software support all count for more than a cosmetic grade.

Decoding a classified listing before you travel to see it

Most used Macs in the UAE are advertised with a short title and a few photos. Before you drive across the city, ask the seller for three things that settle the model without any guesswork: a photo of the System Information Hardware screen showing the model identifier and part number, a photo of the About This Mac window, and the serial number so you can run it through checkcoverage.apple.com yourself. A genuine seller can send all three in a minute.

Then read the title with the tables above in mind. Some phrases tell you less than they seem to:

  • "MacBook Pro 13 2020". Apple sold three different 13 inch Pros that year. Only the identifier separates the M1 from the two Intel versions.
  • "MacBook Air Retina". Apple used the word Retina in the names of the Intel Air models from 2018 to 2020. An Apple silicon Air is named after its chip instead.
  • "Latest model". Ask which chip. A listing written a year ago may still say latest.
  • "Like new, no box". Not a problem in itself, but it removes one place to cross check the serial, so the software checks matter more.
  • "iCloud free" with no demonstration. Treat it as a claim until Find My has been turned off and the Mac erased in front of you.

If the identifier, the part number and the coverage result all name the same model, you know what you are looking at. If they disagree, ask why before going any further.

Which 13 inch MacBook makes sense for a business

If a company is buying a 13 inch Mac for staff today, the decision is mostly between a new MacBook Air and a used Apple silicon model. A few practical rules:

  • Prefer any model that Apple lists with the current macOS. On Apple's pages, that is every Apple silicon 13 inch MacBook from the M1 onwards.
  • For a fleet, standardise on one identifier so spares, chargers and support are simple.
  • Avoid Intel models for staff machines unless the role is light and short term.
  • For new purchases, buy from a seller listed on Apple's locator, which our guide to verifying an Apple Authorized Reseller in Dubai explains.

If the work does not require macOS, a 13 inch Windows business laptop can fit existing management tools with less effort. Codeeo Tech can quote models such as the HP EliteBook 830 G8, the Lenovo Yoga L13 and the HP ProBook 430 G6, along with the wider Lenovo range.

Questions about identifying a 13 inch MacBook

Is there still a 13 inch MacBook Pro?

Apple's "Identify your MacBook Pro" page lists the MacBook Pro (13 inch, M2, 2022) as the last 13 inch Pro. Newer Pro models on that page are 14 inch and 16 inch.

How can I tell an M1 MacBook Air from an Intel one?

Check the model identifier in System Information. Apple lists the M1 Air as MacBookAir10,1, while the Intel Retina model of the same year is MacBookAir9,1.

What does "xx" mean in a MacBook part number?

Apple says the "xx" in part numbers such as MLH12xx/A is a variable that differs by country or region. The rest of the part number identifies the model and configuration.

Is the serial number on the bottom always correct?

Not always. Apple notes that after a logic board replacement the printed serial may no longer be active. Use the serial shown in About This Mac or System Information.

Can I buy a used MacBook 13 inch with Activation Lock on?

You should not. Only the owner's Apple Account can remove it. Ask the seller to turn off Find My and erase the Mac in front of you, or remove it at iCloud.com/find.
